This hands-on workshop introduces faculty to modular course design in Canvas, with attention to clear navigation, consistent structure, and purposeful sequencing of learning activities. Participants examine practical design strategies and apply them directly to their own course spaces.

Crafting Lectures & Activities from Research

Using a published co-authored study and related TRAILS teaching resource as a model, this workshop demonstrates how research can be translated into meaningful classroom learning. Participants engage in a sample activity and develop strategies for connecting their own scholarship and disciplinary research to teaching.

The Liberal Arts Starter Kit

This workshop helps instructors articulate and integrate the value of a liberal arts education into their teaching. Participants engage in reflection, brief presentations on liberal arts learning and the science of learning, and adaptable activities they can use with students.

Canvas 101

Designed for faculty new to Canvas, this hands-on workshop introduces the core tools and structures needed to build and manage a course. Participants work directly in their own course shells while learning practical approaches to home pages, modules, content, assignments, communication, accessibility, and course organization.

Teaching & Learning with Artificial Intelligence

Revising Teaching Statements in the Age of AI

Generative AI has challenged assumptions about learning, authorship, assessment, and expertise. This interactive workshop helps faculty identify their stance toward AI in teaching and revise existing teaching statements so they reflect both enduring pedagogical values and the realities of an AI-rich learning environment.

Test the Task: AI-Resilient Assignment Lab

In this hands-on workshop, faculty test an existing assignment with generative AI and use structured design prompts to strengthen the thinking, process, and learning the assignment asks students to demonstrate.

Smarter Assignments in the Age of AI: A SAMR-Guided Approach

This workshop introduces faculty to practical strategies for integrating generative AI into assignments using the SAMR model. Participants examine common learning challenges, consider how AI can change the nature of a task at different SAMR levels, and redesign elements of their own assignments to support critical thinking, transparency, and responsible use.

15-Minute AI Showcase

A series of brief, practical introductions to emerging AI tools and teaching practices. Topics have included generative AI models, Gemini Notebook, and prompts for pedagogical self-review.

Accessibility & Inclusive Design

Universal Design for Learning 101

This hands-on workshop introduces faculty to the principles of Universal Design for Learning and their application in everyday course design. Participants identify potential barriers to learning and explore practical ways to provide greater flexibility in engagement, representation, and student expression.

Accessibility in Action: PowerPoint for Learning

This workshop introduces intentional and accessible slide design through Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, the POUR accessibility framework, and foundational graphic design principles. Participants apply these ideas to improve the clarity and usability of their own instructional materials.

Web-Based User Accessibility

This session helps faculty build more accessible digital course materials by combining the rationale for accessibility with demonstration and hands-on practice. Participants apply web-accessible design strategies to common course content.

15-Minute Accessibility Fixes

A series of brief, practical sessions focused on high-impact accessibility improvements. Topics have included the Microsoft Accessibility Checker, audio descriptions, and accessible links and lists.
